Brooklyn Blossoms

Brooklyn Blossoms

Experiencing awe can come at any time.

It’s highly likely when you’re standing in front of some extraordinary scene or place, like the Colosseum, Eiffel Tower or Grand Canyon. Your jaw drops, you are at a loss for words and you feel like you’re having a momentary out-of-body experience. It’s one of those states we hope we’ll frequently be in when we travel.

I love experiencing awe when I don’t expect it, too. During the more “ordinary moments” in the day. And without any forewarning or expectations, the impact of everyday awe can be just as rewarding and transporting, and it can stop you in your tracks.

Like this townhouse in Brooklyn did to me! I was just out for a walk with family I was visiting, and I came upon this sight. Everyone else kept walking but I was transfixed. In these moments, I have learned to just go with the feeling and take it all in. I’m not sure how long I stood there, but the family yelled at me from half-way down the block to hurry it up. I snapped out of my stupor, grabbed my phone to photograph this spot, and ran to catch up to everyone else.

I painted the scene a year later as this miniature. I could recall that moment as I was painting it and still can as I look at the finished piece now. I have also learned not to over-analyse why it was this particular scene that made me stare in wonder. (Okay, basic analysis? Probably something about the harmonious composition of cheery pinks, decorative architecture and vivid window reflections… and that I’m a wild romantic who could see myself as Lady of the Manor from TV’s “The Gilded Age” in this home forever!)

Bottom line is I’m so grateful that these spontaneous instances of awe keep showing up, not only as inspiration for art, but also as a wellness tonic!

Time to go take another walk!
