Miniature Worlds

I’m often asked why I frequently paint very small.

When I choose a subject that I’d like to paint, I will also choose a size to paint it. While some images I believe will be better captured in a larger size, some subjects intrigue me more in smaller formats.

To date, my smallest works are 2.5″ x 2.5″ and what makes me choose this size for a subject? Many times the subject will be a close-up view of something in nature, a snippet from a bigger photo image. In these close-ups new intricate worlds reveal themselves – types of grasses that intertwine in complex patterns, flower stems that somehow find their way to the sky through twisted brambles, colours that don’t appear to the eye until close up, and many other discoveries. And there’s also the play of sunlight in these mini pieces that expose dark underworlds, confusing middle grounds of multiple shadows, and finally the feeling of freedom in the full sun.

I really enjoy the challenge of painting these little worlds. Figuring out where to draw with ink, and where to use paint strokes instead. Using the smallest of my brushes with precision and steadying my hand and eyes. Deciding when adding one more leaf or blade of grass would be too much. And ensuring I am breathing as the paintbrush reaches the paper!

Yes, lots to think about for such small work but also very rewarding. Here are some of those works that I did in the latter half of last year:

Wild Poppies – 2.5″ x 2.5″ (sold)
Olive Harvest Time In Umbria – 2.5″ x 2.5″ (available)
Piccolo Paradiso – 2.5″ x 2.5″ (sold)
Water Lilies – 2.5″ x 2.5″ (sold)

Hopefully that gives you a bit more insight into why I paint these tiny works, and I have more planned for this year. I hope you’ll get the opportunity to see them in-person some day too, as I believe these miniature worlds are more fascinating when you are standing in front of them!
