After 4 years of painting angels for the holidays, I’m mixing it up for 2019 with two painting subjects I absolutely love – doors and Italy!
Last Christmas in Rome, my artist-heart-brain was overwhelmed with all the incredible sights of the city decorated for the season. So many things I could paint! And will paint, but for my holiday series this year, I’ve chosen 4 different scenes of December-ed doorways – 3 in Rome, 1 in Florence – for new miniature paintings.
This first one stopped me in my tracks! The massively-overgrown summer ivy above this Campo di Fiori shop had been decked out in bright red poinsettias, holly berries and glittery icicles – the perfect holiday transformation. And as a Canadian used to the Christmas cold and not the Italian warmth, the open window above the shop makes me smile!

#166 – Rome Door in December

2.5″ x 3.5″ ink and watercolour
Three more miniatures await more paint, so stay tuned for more Doors Actually!
