The Greening of the Streets

No garden? No backyard? No balcony or terrace?

No problem! Do your gardening out the front door on the street!

An Italian friend explained to me that it’s very unusual in the heart of a medieval city to have a green space with your building. Only the richest citizens included a courtyard or some garden space when they built their palaces, and this space was often quite small. She said that most people will take advantage of windows, balconies and terraces to grow as much as they can!

Someone in Orvieto, Umbria took it a step further, and took their garden out onto the street in front of their house. I’ve never seen so many pots lining the road – of all different types of plants and flowers! This is also the same house I painted a few months back that had attached pot holders all over their walls. These homeowners must have the town’s biggest Green Thumb!

It certainly was an out-of-the-ordinary sight, but it added so much more charm to the dusty street!
