While at my last course, I was challenged to make a large drawing of this square in Cortona. I don’t usually do large pen and watercolour pieces, so I wasn’t sure how my usual pen techniques for smaller pieces would work at 3x the size.
My first drawing was done when I was sitting in the piazza, but my dimensions weren’t good and I couldn’t get the entire piazza on my paper. I started from one side and worked my way left – bad idea. I should have started with whatever was in the centre, and then worked my way out. With no time left to start sketch #2, I took a photo for a second attempt once I got home.
I started in the middle this time from the photo, and got everything onto the paper. Some of my pen experiments didn’t work though, but I’ll take this learning and apply it to a third (and final?) version on watercolour paper.
Gotta love a challenge!
