Where will you travel on holiday once you feel you can?

In an article I was reading this morning, it appears that the majority of us answered that we would travel first to a beloved place – that a strong need to reconnect to what we know and love has developed within many travellers, versus the desire to explore the new.

This struck a chord with me as I am definitely one of those people – when I can, I will definitely return to a few special places; places that have made me feel most alive, that have shaped me. In anticipation and longing for them, I’ve been painting them over the last 17 months – the Amalfi Coast, Montepulciano, Lucca. And their painting continues with my newest miniature, “Trullo Beauty in Puglia”.

My husband and I spent a week in the Itria Valley in Puglia a few years ago, and it quickly worked its magic on me. I recall being surprised at how rested and uninhibited I could feel. It wasn’t intentional, but somehow this place changed my way of being. I wrote every day, like a faucet had been turned on (I wasn’t painting at the time). Schedules went out the window (and I love me a schedule!), and any visits to small villages were filled with languorous lunches and meandering walks, and feeling absolutely no need to be anywhere else… ever again.

This mysterious energy was also fuelled by warm people, fantastic food, and fascinating architecture, like the traditional trullo structures that dotted the valley in all sizes and combinations. Our hosts’ property contained a small trullo that was incorporated into their apartment, but that all their guests could enjoy from the courtyard. My husband and I would often sit out there, making wine-soaked plans about restoring some trulli for a dream home!

Oh, Puglia! You’ve been gently calling me back. If there ever was a time, I definitely would love to reconnect with that rested, uninhibited woman!

I will go back, but for now, I am blessed to have the recollections of “Trullo Beauty in Puglia”!
