Who loves Aperitivo time?
Before 2006, I really had no idea what it was! Aperitivo is a pre-dinner drink usually accompanied by a bevy of small snacks. Some of you may be saying “oh, Happy Hour” – sort of, but in Italy, it’s those snacks and the Italian locations that take this practice to great heights!
I was introduced to aperitivo on my first hiking trip to the Cinque Terre by the lovely Rose, who was looking after our small group. She suggested that throughout the day we each pick up a food goodie to contribute to a 5:30pm get-together at our hotel. We continued this tradition each day of our 9-day trip. It turned out to be one of my favourite parts of the day, and of the trip!
With a delicious array of cheese, olives, and salami, we’d sip our wine and recount the stories of our day. In Monterosso al Mare, we held our aperitivo on the sunny, hilly terraces of Albergo Degli Amici. Between mouthfuls of yumminess and belly laughs about our silly-tourist moments, aperitivo helped create our little community. And when not communing, I would melt into the spectacular view – overlooking the rooftops down to the little seaside bay.
When I came home from that trip, I incorporated the practice of aperitivo into our day. I love the spirit of catching up and decompressing before tackling dinner or evening chores. Sometimes the spirit and the conversation is so satisfying, we continue it long past the dinner hour.
My latest miniature captures those sunny aperitivo moments with the vista from the garden terrace in Monterosso al Mare. I’ve chosen to illuminate this view and memory in a sun-like vignette shape, which is a bit of a departure for me, but I believe it lends a lightness and happiness to the piece. Cin Cin!
