As I’ve written before, one of my great travel joys is food shopping in new places. If you follow this blog, you’ll know that I also like to paint these stores!
This new miniature is of one of those fascinating shopping spots – De Miccoli in Siena, Italy. It’s a famous delicatessen-type store, where you can get all kinds of delicious Tuscan traditional foods, and many local meats and cheese. Once you’ve selected your groceries, you can takeaway a panino sandwich to fuel you for the walk home. And with the wooden cutout cinta sinese pig out front, you can guess their specialty sandwiches!
In my first year as an artist, a couple commissioned me to paint this shop from one of their photos (see it here). I really enjoyed the experience of painting all the delicious details in the window. However, at that time, I had not been to this shop on any of my Siena visits – how had I missed it?! So on subsequent visits to Siena, I made sure to experience it for myself. This new painting is from one of my photos, and as I painted this little treasure, my mouth was constantly watering from memories of their porchetta panino!
