Many years ago, a collector asked if I was ever going to paint the Roman Forum. I answered that since I work from my own photos, I hadn’t taken a sufficiently good photo of the site – one that could become a compelling painting.
Then, years later, I was visiting the Capitoline Museum and remembered that there was some great views of the Forum from behind the museum buildings. I walked down to the viewing platforms and took the perfect photos for future paintings… and stood marveling at the beauty of these ancient remains and how fortunate we are to still enjoy so much of it!
Last year, again I was asked if I had a Roman Forum painting, and this was the final nudge I needed to paint this vignette-style miniature of this beloved historical site – this scene from the Temple of Vespasian and Titus all the way to the Colosseum in the distance.

Now when I am asked if I have a Roman Forum miniature, I will be able to give the famous Roman Emperor “thumbs up”!
