A Satisfying End

In my travels across Italy over the years, I have learned that Italians like to finish a big satisfying meal with a shot of hot espresso. This is not a Canadian tradition, unless an overly sugary dessert is involved. And while there are many sugary Italian desserts, an espresso can stand alone as the last course of a good meal.

It’s become a bit of a new travel habit that I now photograph that final cup of coffee at the end of a memorable meal. These cups can take me back to the atmosphere, the people, the food, the conversation, the physical sensations, the day… and on and on. Perhaps that’s why I paint so many cups of coffee – to relive these moments! Like this new one from Roccascalegna, Abruzzo!

It was November 1st, a holiday in Italy, and we had just finished climbing up to the historic castle and back down onto a valley trail for some additional exploration and exercise. A few hours later, we were famished when we reached the town center only to find most of the businesses closed, including restaurants! Checking Google, it said that one restaurant on the way into town might be open, but it was about to close in 15 minutes. We raced across town to the restaurant, half-expecting it to be closed or ready to close. Instead, it was packed full of locals, and the owner made some space at the back of the restaurant for us. We asked if the kitchen was still serving, and he laughed “Certo!” (“of course”) We then proceeded to have a delicious big holiday meal in between bits of conversation with him about Canada and our trip. My husband’s meal ended with cake but my meal ended with this double espresso macchiato decorated with a foam-art heart!

We were never rushed. We were one of two tables left around 4:00pm. We happily waddled back to our rental home, extolling the virtues of the restaurant and a memorable day… that for me, ended with a great cup of coffee!

  1. How perfect, Marion. Totally understand and know the generosity and kindness of Italians, and it is also how you approach the situation. With kindness you will get kindness.

November 1 is All Saints Day, a holy day, and it happened to be my mother’s “Name Day” (also another festive day in the Italian Calendar!) My mum’s name was Santina, “Little Saint” in Italian.

Thanks for sharing these bits of jewels of our life. This is what matters at the end, these memories of little moments that fill your heart and stay with you forever.

    Un abbraccio,
    Mercedes
